EA Mandates Office Return, Halts Remote Hiring

Author : Hazel Jul 22,2025

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially informed employees that its era of remote work is coming to an end, with the company mandating a full return to office in a sweeping policy change. In an internal email obtained by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson emphasized the creative advantages of in-person collaboration, stating that physical workplaces generate “a kinetic energy that fuels creativity, innovation, and connection”—often leading to breakthroughs that enhance player experiences.

The updated policy redefines “hybrid work” as requiring employees to be in their local EA office a minimum of three days per week. Additionally, EA is introducing a new geographic standard: any employee living within 30 miles (48 kilometers) of an EA office will be expected to follow this hybrid model. Those outside that radius may continue working remotely—but only if their role isn’t designated as On Site or Hybrid. The Offsite Local work model, previously used for employees near—but not in—office hubs, will be phased out over the next 3 to 24 months.

What Employees Need to Know

  • These changes will not take effect immediately. Teams should continue under current directives until their specific business unit provides further notice.
  • All transitions will include a minimum 12-week advance notice period, with timing varying by location and communicated locally.
  • Remote status for employees outside the 30-mile radius remains valid unless their role is officially classified as On Site or Hybrid.
  • Any exceptions to the new work model—or future remote hires—will require explicit approval from a CEO Direct report or Laura Miele.

According to anonymous sources within EA who spoke to IGN, reactions among staff have been mixed but largely negative. Some employees expressed concern over lengthy commutes, while others cited childcare responsibilities or medical conditions that made remote work essential. Remote workers beyond the 30-mile radius are now questioning the long-term stability of their roles, particularly if relocation isn’t feasible. Per internal guidance, existing remote workers currently operating under temporary exemptions can expect those allowances to expire within the next 3 to 24 months.

Industry-Wide Shift Amid Remote Work Backlash

While remote work became widespread across the video game industry during the 2020 pandemic, many AAA studios—including Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard—have since reversed course, pushing for office returns. These moves have sparked frustration, prompted resignations, and raised concerns about equity between urban and rural employees. EA’s latest directive aligns with this broader trend, reinforcing a return-to-office momentum that shows no signs of slowing.

This announcement follows recent company-wide layoffs affecting approximately 300 employees, adding to over 670 positions eliminated in 2024 and earlier cuts at BioWare. As EA reshapes both its workforce and workplace strategy, the impact on talent retention and company culture remains to be seen.
