After Inc.: A $2 Gamble in a Free-to-Play World
Ndemic Creations' bold pricing strategy for its latest title, After Inc., has raised eyebrows. Released on November 28th, 2024, at a price point of just $2, the sequel to the hugely popular Plague Inc. is a departure from the free-to-play model dominating the mobile market. Developer James Vaughn, in an interview with Game File, admitted to reservations about this decision.
While After Inc. offers a brighter, post-apocalyptic setting compared to its predecessors, the saturated mobile landscape, filled with free-to-play games and microtransactions, posed a significant challenge. Vaughn acknowledged the risk, stating that the success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc. was crucial in justifying a premium pricing model. He believes their established player base and the continued demand for high-quality strategy games on mobile provided the necessary foundation for After Inc.'s launch.
The developers have committed to a "buy once, play forever" approach. No consumable microtransactions are present, and expansion packs will be one-time purchases. This commitment to value is reflected in After Inc.'s strong performance, currently ranking among the top paid games on the App Store and boasting a high rating on Google Play. A Steam early access version, After Inc. Revival, is also slated for release in 2025.
Rebuilding Civilization in a Zombie-Infested UK
After Inc. blends 4X grand strategy with simulation elements. Players must rebuild human society in a post-Plague Inc. United Kingdom, establishing settlements, managing resources, and fending off zombie hordes. Ruins provide valuable materials, and players can construct various buildings to support their growing population. The choice of five leaders (ten on Steam), each with unique abilities, adds strategic depth. Vaughn playfully assures players that even zombie threats can be overcome with resourcefulness.
