Space Marine 2 Modders to Add Tau, Necrons, and More, Starting with a Fishing Mini-Game

Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are thrilled as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has opened up its internal editor to the modding community, igniting hopes that the game could enjoy a prolonged lifespan akin to *Skyrim* through user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this significant step on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, labeling it as "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community."

Saber Interactive has released the official Integration Studio for public use, the very tool used by developers for crafting gameplay. This initial release empowers modders to manipulate everything from level designs and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combos, UI, and HUD elements, streamlining the modding process for *Space Marine 2*.

Grigorenko emphasized the studio's commitment to the modding scene, stating, “Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming.” To kickstart the creativity, he shared playful concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, leader of the Ultramarines, showcasing the potential of the new tools.

To understand the community's plans, I spoke with Tom, known as *Warhammer Workshop*, the modder behind the *Astartes Overhaul* for *Space Marine 2*. After enabling 12-player co-op, Tom now has access to all scripting tools that govern mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. This opens up possibilities for innovative game modes, such as a roguelite where players start with just a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to acquire weapons and health upon defeating foes. Tom suggested that killing a Carnifex might reward players with a Heavy Bolter.

While a new cinematic campaign, such as one focused on Chaos, is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes is challenging without access to animation tools. However, he's actively working on introducing new factions like the Tau and Necrons, thanks to available rigs. Meanwhile, the modding community is eagerly working on the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, as challenged by Grigorenko.

The response from *Space Marine 2* fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the game's success and status as one of the top-selling Warhammer video games, it initially offered only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos (including Chaos Marines and Tzeentch Daemons), and the Tyrannids. With hopes for more factions through official DLC, particularly after the campaign teased the Necrons, fans can now take the initiative themselves.

Redditor Mortwight commented, “This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim,” highlighting the potential longevity this modding support could bring to *Space Marine 2*.

This development is especially noteworthy given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment's recent announcement of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*. While some fans worry about the impact on potential *Space Marine 2* DLC, both Saber and Focus have reassured that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now wielding the editor, *Space Marine 2* is poised for an extended and vibrant future.
