Curious about the fate of GTA Online post-GTA 6 launch? While Rockstar Games hasn't provided a definitive answer, Strauss Zelnick, the head of Take-Two, shared some encouraging news during an IGN interview on February 14, 2025.

Zelnick refrained from discussing specific titles but offered a compelling analogy regarding GTA Online. "I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made," Zelnick stated. "But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles."

He cited the example of NBA 2K Online, which was launched in China in 2012, followed by a sequel in 2017. Despite the sequel's release, Zelnick noted that they "did not sunset Online 1," as both games retained massive audiences in China. He further emphasized, "So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."

Given this perspective, it's plausible that Rockstar and Take-Two may continue supporting GTA Online as long as players remain engaged, even after GTA 6's launch. Additionally, GTA Online has been a significant revenue generator for over a decade, making it unlikely for the company to abandon such a financially successful title.

In the realm of GTA Online, reports suggest that Rockstar is developing a similar platform for GTA 6, incorporating user-generated content (UGC), as per Digiday's report on February 17, 2025. This would position GTA 6’s online version akin to Roblox and Fortnite.

According to Digiday, "Rockstar Games has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators, as well as dedicated GTA content creators, about the potential to create custom experiences inside the upcoming game." This approach would enable players to modify the game’s assets and environment, and even add their own, creating a unique visual sandbox experience, a hallmark of UGC.

By involving content creators and modders, Rockstar and Take-Two could not only expand GTA 6's reach to a broader audience but also increase revenue through "virtual item sales or through revenue programs." Although Digiday reached out to Rockstar Games for comment, the company has yet to respond.

Despite being a 14-year-old game, GTA 5 and its online counterpart continue to rank as the third most-watched game on Twitch. With plans to integrate modders and content creators into the GTA 6 online experience, the game is poised to generate significant excitement and engagement across various platforms.
