Stray Kite Studios, a team of industry veterans who have contributed to acclaimed projects like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, has just unveiled Wartorn, their first original game. Scheduled for a PC release in spring 2025, Wartorn is a tactical roguelite that promises a fresh take on the genre.
Established in 2018 and based in Dallas, Texas, Stray Kite Studios boasts a team of around 30 dedicated professionals. The studio has previously worked on the standalone version of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, titled A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure, and created numerous Creative maps for Fortnite.
With Wartorn, Stray Kite Studios introduces a compelling narrative centered around two elven sisters on a quest to reunite with their family. This journey is fraught with peril, demanding players to navigate through intense battles and make morally challenging decisions.
Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way
Set in a fantasy world engulfed in chaos, Wartorn offers a deeply immersive experience where the environment itself becomes a dynamic part of gameplay. The game features physics-driven environmental destruction, ensuring that no two encounters are the same. This chaotic element underscores the game's thematic focus on finding purpose amid turmoil. "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us," said Paul Hellquist, co-founder and creative director at Stray Kite Studios.
Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions
Between battles, players of Wartorn will face tough decisions, such as choosing who to feed or save from death. These choices are integral to the game's story-driven roguelite experience, ensuring that each playthrough is unique. Combat in Wartorn is equally dynamic, with a magic system that allows players to mix and match elemental forces like fire, water, and lightning. These elements interact in various ways and offer strategic advantages in different scenarios, such as shocking enemies in water or igniting mobs covered in tar.
As with many roguelites, Wartorn includes a progression system where upgrades carry over between runs, making subsequent attempts more manageable. The game's visuals are designed to evoke a painterly aesthetic, enhancing the drama of its setting. To ensure accessible gameplay, Wartorn also features the ability to slow down the action, allowing players to issue precise commands amidst the chaos.
Set to launch in early access in spring 2025, Wartorn will be available on both Steam and the Epic Games Store, promising an engaging and thought-provoking experience for players.
