Dead Space Creator Calls It Quits? AAA Dev 'Tough' After Callisto

Author : Noah Mar 09,2026

Glen Schofield, co-creator of Dead Space, co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, and director of The Callisto Protocol, recently expressed concerns about the challenging state of the games industry. After failing to secure funding for his latest prototype, he acknowledged he may have "directed my last game."

Funding Challenges for New Horror Concept

In a candid LinkedIn post, Schofield revealed he'd spent eight months collaborating with his artist daughter Nicole on an innovative horror game concept. Working with a compact team of six U.S. developers and a full UK crew, he initially proposed a $17 million budget before being advised to reduce it dramatically.

"Some ideas are better left untouched than done cheap," Schofield explained regarding the decision to abandon the project when asked to shrink the budget to $2-5 million. His development team is now seeking new opportunities in the struggling industry.

A Veteran Reflects on Industry Changes

The acclaimed developer expressed nostalgia for AAA development: "I miss the team, the chaos, the joy of building something for fans." While currently focused on art and writing, Schofield acknowledged uncertain career prospects: "Maybe I've directed my last game. Who knows?"

Legacy of Striking Distance Studios

Schofield founded Striking Distance Studios under Krafton six years ago, initially planning a PUBG universe narrative game. The studio ultimately released The Callisto Protocol in December 2022 - a standalone horror title that received mixed reviews and underperformed commercially.

The game faced numerous challenges including performance issues and reported development crunch. Our review awarded The Callisto Protocol a 7/10, describing it as "a satisfyingly gory spiritual successor to Dead Space" that ultimately felt more like homage than innovation.
