The director behind The Fall Guy is reportedly in negotiations to helm Netflix's live-action Gears of War adaptation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Leitch - known for directing high-octane action films like Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train - is in talks to bring Microsoft's iconic shooter franchise to the big screen.
A Powerhouse Production Team
Leitch would produce alongside his creative partner Kelly McCormick, with Gears developer The Coalition also involved in production. Screenwriting duties will reportedly go to Jon Spaihts (Dune, Doctor Strange), suggesting Netflix is assembling top-tier talent for this adaptation.
While Netflix secured the Gears of War rights over two years ago, development appears to be accelerating. Alongside the live-action film, an adult animated series is reportedly in development to expand the franchise. The projects could potentially launch a multimedia universe if successful.
The Marcus Fenix Casting Dilemma
The burning question remains: Who will portray series protagonist Marcus Fenix? Former WWE star Dave Bautista has been vocally campaigning for the role for years, even receiving endorsement from Gears co-creator Cliff Bleszinski. Bautista's physicality and recent dramatic performances make him a strong fan-favorite candidate.
This adaptation enters a booming market for video game adaptations, following the massive successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and HBO's The Last of Us. With major projects like Borderlands and Minecraft also arriving soon, the genre shows no signs of slowing down.
Microsoft's Media Ambitions
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently reaffirmed the company's commitment to adaptations despite Halo's mixed reception. "We're learning and growing through this process," Spencer stated, noting each project builds experience for future efforts. The company seems determined to create a successful formula for bringing Xbox franchises to screens.
Meanwhile, The Coalition continues developing Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel game announced during Xbox's recent showcase. While no release date has been confirmed, the simultaneous development of game and film content suggests Microsoft is fully investing in expanding the Gears universe.
