Original Frostpunk Remade Using The Unreal Engine

Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios surprised fans with their latest announcement on April 24 via a Twitter (X) post, unveiling Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original game now powered by the Unreal Engine. This move marks a significant shift from their proprietary Liquid Engine used for the first game, to the more advanced Unreal Engine 5, which was utilized in the development of Frostpunk 2.

According to the announcement, Frostpunk 1886 aims to not only preserve the legacy of the original but also enhance it with a completely new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and more. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, 11 bit Studios shared their vision for the project, emphasizing their goal to leverage the capabilities of the Unreal Engine for improved visuals, higher resolution, and other enhancements.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

Frostpunk 1886 Uses Unreal Engine to Reimagine the Original

Currently in development, Frostpunk 1886 is slated for a 2027 release. 11 bit Studios is dedicated to creating an experience that serves as an excellent entry point for newcomers while also satisfying the cravings of die-hard fans, encouraging replayability. The studio has also teased the possibility of new content through future DLCs, signaling a commitment to more frequent releases, starting with Frostpunk 1886.

In the interim, fans can look forward to enjoying Frostpunk 2, which is already available on PC and will see a console launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this summer. Additionally, a free major update for Frostpunk 2 is set to roll out on May 8, aligning with the studio's roadmap for continuous engagement and development.
