In the latest installment of the renowned Dynasty Warriors series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, players face a heightened challenge as the game's producer, Tomohiko Sho, issued a clear directive to the development team: "This time, go and kill the player." This statement sets the stage for a more intense and demanding gameplay experience.

During an insightful interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho elaborated on the philosophy behind this approach. The aim was to inject a greater sense of realism into the game, acknowledging that in a war-torn battlefield, not just the player but also the enemy soldiers and generals are fighting for survival. This shift in design philosophy has resulted in stronger and more formidable opponents throughout the game.

Sho emphasized that the increased difficulty was carefully balanced to ensure the game remains accessible. He explained, "Even if you're not that good at action games, if you learn them in order, you can play comfortably and feel a sense of success." The challenge was to maintain the traditional "musou" genre's exhilaration of defeating countless enemies while integrating a more realistic war setting.

Returning To Its "Origins"

Dynasty Warriors: Origins marks a significant departure from its predecessors in naming convention, opting out of the numerical sequence that the series is known for. Instead of being titled Dynasty Warriors 10, it is the first non-numbered entry in the franchise's history. The "Origins" in the title underscores the game's focus on the first half of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, specifically up to the Battle of Chibi (Battle of the Red Cliffs).

In an interview with TheGamer at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Sho highlighted the intention behind this narrative choice: "We really wanted to be thorough and intense in telling this story; it’s one of the epic points, so we’re only focusing on up until that point." This focused storytelling approach is meant to deliver a more concentrated and impactful experience.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the newest main installment after a seven-year hiatus, continues to be inspired by the Chinese novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The game introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, who embarks on a journey across a war-torn China where various factions vie for dominance.

Released on January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Dive into the action and experience the revamped challenge that awaits in this storied franchise.
