'I Know It's Not What Everybody Else Is Doing' — Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Will Keep on Putting PlayStation and Nintendo Logos in Microsoft Showcases

Microsoft's recent shift in showcasing multiplatform games during its Xbox events marks a significant change in strategy. Previously, announcements often omitted mention of rival platforms like PlayStation 5, even for games launching on both consoles. This was evident in Microsoft's June 2024 showcase, where games like Doom: The Dark Ages and Dragon Age: The Veilguard initially lacked PS5 branding.

PS5 logos were absent from Microsoft's June 2024 showcase.

However, this approach has changed. The January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct included PS5 alongside other platforms in game reveals for titles like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo, who continue to focus primarily on their own consoles in their showcases, even for multiplatform titles. Recent State of Play showcases, for example, omitted any mention of Xbox.

In an interview with XboxEra, Phil Spencer explained this change as a commitment to transparency and honesty about game availability. He stated that the goal is to inform players of all available platforms, emphasizing that games should be the central focus. While acknowledging platform differences, Spencer highlighted Microsoft's strategy of enabling broader game access, even if it means deviating from the practices of competitors like Sony and Nintendo.

This new transparency suggests future Xbox showcases will likely include PS5 and potentially Nintendo Switch 2 logos for multiplatform titles. The anticipated June 2025 showcase could feature games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, and Perfect Dark displaying the PS5 logo alongside Xbox branding. However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
