Annapurna Interactive's Entire Game Division Resigns, Casting Doubt on the Future
A mass resignation has shaken Annapurna Interactive, the video game publishing arm of Annapurna Pictures. The entire staff, reportedly over 20 employees, resigned following failed negotiations with parent company Annapurna Pictures.
The Fallout at Annapurna Interactive
The publisher, known for titles like Stray and What Remains of Edith Finch, is facing an uncertain future. The dispute centered around the staff's attempt to establish Annapurna Interactive as an independent entity. These negotiations ultimately failed, leading to the mass resignation, including former president Nathan Gary.
According to Bloomberg, Gary confirmed the collective resignation of all 25 team members, stating it was a difficult decision not taken lightly.
Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison has assured partners of their commitment to ongoing projects and interactive entertainment expansion, stating a desire for more integrated storytelling across their various media.
The impact on indie developers partnered with Annapurna is significant, leaving many in a precarious position as they seek new contacts and clarification on contract fulfillment.
Remedy Entertainment, partially funded by Annapurna Interactive for Control 2, clarified via its communications director, Thomas Puha, on Twitter (X) that their agreement is with Annapurna Pictures and that they are self-publishing Control 2.
Annapurna Interactive has appointed Hector Sanchez, a co-founder, as the new president. Sources suggest Sanchez intends to honor existing contracts and replace departed staff. This follows a recent restructuring announcement, also involving the departure of Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella.
This situation highlights the complexities of the video game industry and the potential challenges faced by both large and independent studios.
