Analogous City

This app is a component of a museum installation centered on the Analogous City.

The application forms part of a museum installation dedicated to The Analogous City, an art piece conceived by Aldo Rossi, Eraldo Consolascio, Bruno Reichlin, and Fabio Reinhart for the 1976 Venice Biennale of Architecture. This augmented reality app functions alongside a reproduction of The Analogous City—accessible at http://archizoom.epfl.ch—and overlays the artwork with various layers that display all associated collage references.

To engage with the digital installation featured in the exhibition Aldo Rossi - The Window of the Poet, Prints 1973-1997, visitors must use this app. The exhibition is hosted at Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, Archizoom EPFL in Lausanne, and GAMeC in Bergamo.

When you buy the reproduction map of the Analogous City published by Archizoom, you can recreate the interactive museum installation at any time and place. The printed map also includes texts written by Aldo Rossi, Fabio Reinhart, and Dario Rodighiero.

Conceived as a true urban project, The Analogous City (La Città Analoga) brings together diverse historical and architectural elements. These range from Giovanni Battista Caporali’s drawing of Vitruvius’ city (1536) and Galileo Galilei’s illustration of the Pleiades Constellation (1610), to Tanzio da Varallo’s painting David and Goliath (c. 1625), Francesco Borromini’s plan of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane (1638-1641), the Dufour topographical map (1864), Le Corbusier’s master plan for the chapel of Notre Dame du Haut (1954), and a variety of architectural designs by Aldo Rossi and his collaborators.

“Between past and present, reality and imagination, the analogous city is perhaps simply the city to be designed day by day—facing challenges and finding solutions, with reasonable confidence that things will ultimately improve.” – Aldo Rossi on the Analogous City, published in Lotus International n. 13, 1976.
