VNeID: Vietnam's Electronic Identification and Authentication Application
The VNeID app, developed by Vietnam's National Population Data Center (Ministry of Public Security), leverages population data for identification and electronic authentication. Designed for residents and visitors in Vietnam, VNeID offers a digital alternative to physical documents, streamlining various processes in a digital environment.
VNeID's key benefits include: citizen identification, digital government and society facilitation, simplified medical report declarations, and faster domestic travel declarations. The app also aids authorities in COVID-19 contact tracing and timely notifications.
App Permissions: Using VNeID requires granting the following permissions:
- Internet Access: For app functionality.
- Camera Access: To scan CCCD (Citizen Identification Card) QR codes for faster data entry and to scan QR codes at checkpoints for travel and medical declarations.
- Access to Photos, Videos, and Files: To store QR code images for verification at checkpoints.
- Notification Access: To receive app notifications.
Personal Information Collection: User-provided data includes: full name, phone number, citizen identification number, gender, birth year, address, nationality, health status, travel details (origin, destination, vehicle plate), and COVID-19 exposure information. All data collection is voluntary and requires user consent through form submission. Users are responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of the information they provide.
Privacy and Copyright Protection: The National Population Data Center secures user data, using it solely for COVID-19 prevention and control, public health, and disease prevention. Data is never used for commercial purposes or to violate user privacy. Data sharing may occur with health authorities and other relevant agencies to enhance COVID-19 prevention efforts. No other data uses are permitted. The app adheres to Vietnamese law and its own policy regarding user privacy.
Key Privacy Features:
- No Location Tracking: VNeID does not collect location data.
- Anonymity: Community participation is anonymous, except for information shared with authorities regarding confirmed and suspected COVID-19 cases for contact tracing purposes.
