EDR Blackbox Scanner & PDF Collision Reports for Accident Investigators
WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION
Use the CrashScan App with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to scan the vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), also known as the "blackbox," when supported (see vehicle support below). CrashScan helps investigators identify, capture, and interpret stored pre-crash data. This information can be used to validate auto insurance claims and provide key insights into liability or questionable collision incidents.
VEHICLE SUPPORT
(Event Data Recorder & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
Over 3,000 unique year/make/model combinations are supported worldwide. Confirm compatibility here:

CONTEXTUAL ACCIDENT REPORTS
If the CrashScan is successful, the report will detail impact severity, impact orientation (front/rear/side impact), and provide context such as:
- accident severity: minor, moderate, or severe
- EDR trigger threshold information
- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data including speed, brake and accelerator pedal usage, and steering input
- number of vehicle occupants and seatbelt status
- estimated repair costs (economic impact in $)
- likelihood of structural crush damage
- injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- typical g-forces from daily activities for reference
*injury risk algorithms analyze stored acceleration values, scientific research, and databases including the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS)

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)
Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is considered diagnostic and non-private. However, insurers typically obtain consent as a best practice.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted in December 2015, restricts EDR data access and establishes that collected information belongs to the vehicle owner or lessee. Seventeen states have enacted EDR privacy laws: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. These states generally require vehicle owner or policyholder consent for EDR data download, with certain
exceptions.
