Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, with the team teasing its debut game in a recent PlayStation Blog post. Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, shared that teamLFG originated at Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon, and is currently working on an ambitious incubation project that he's very excited about.
The name teamLFG stands for 'Looking For Group,' reflecting the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from a variety of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game is set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.
teamLFG emphasizes their mission to create games that foster friendship, community, and belonging. They aim to build an environment where players are excited to log on and find their teammates already online, forming connections and creating memorable moments. The studio is committed to developing immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, learning, playing, and mastering the game. They plan to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests and intend to remain responsive to player feedback even after the game's launch, ensuring continuous growth and evolution of both the game and its community.

teamLFG's project emerged from Bungie amid significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another round in 2024 that impacted 220 more people, or 17% of the studio's workforce. During this period, 155 employees were integrated elsewhere within Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project that would become teamLFG was spun off.
Last year, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2. Since then, Bungie has fully revealed the extraction shooter Marathon and confirmed the roadmap for Destiny 2's future. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
