Pokémon TCG Devs Gift Trade Tokens, But Feature Concerns Linger

Author : Mila Feb 23,2025

Creatures Inc., the developer of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, has addressed player concerns regarding the recently implemented trading mechanic by gifting players 1,000 Trade Tokens. This is sufficient for only two substantial trades. The developer continues to investigate solutions to improve the controversial system.

Players logging in will find the Trade Tokens in their Gift menu without any accompanying message. However, Creatures Inc. issued a statement on X/Twitter expressing gratitude for player feedback and patience. The developer faced significant criticism last week, with the trading system described as "hilariously toxic," "predatory," and "downright greedy."

The trading feature, like other in-game mechanics, incorporates restrictions limiting pack openings, Wonder Picking, and now trading, unless real-world money is spent. The high cost of acquiring Trade Tokens—requiring the deletion of five cards to trade one of the same rarity—was a major point of contention.

Eight days after the launch of the trading feature, which met with considerable backlash, Creatures Inc. acknowledged the negative reception. While the developer had previously solicited feedback, the implementation fell short of player expectations. Creatures Inc. conceded that "some of the restrictions…are preventing players from being able to casually enjoy" trading.

The developer pledged to address the issues by offering necessary items as rewards in future events. However, the Cresselia ex Drop Event, released on February 3rd, failed to deliver on this promise.

Many believe the trading system is designed to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly generated $200 million in its first month, before trading was available. This suspicion is fueled by the inability to trade cards of 2-Star rarity or higher. The inability to easily trade for desired cards incentivizes players to spend money on packs for a chance to obtain them. One player reported spending approximately $1,500 to complete the first set, highlighting the significant financial investment required.
