Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Return
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that a comeback is "always a possibility," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection, which includes Marvel vs. Capcom 2, features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon. These characters, largely absent from recent entries aside from minor cameos, could see a resurgence thanks to increased exposure through the collection.
Matsumoto hinted that their future appearances might extend beyond the Versus series. He suggested that strong fan interest could lead to their inclusion in titles like Street Fighter 6. The re-release, he explained, serves to reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, generating excitement and providing Capcom with a broader range of creative options.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been a long-time goal for Matsumoto and his team, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel and careful timing. This release isn't just about revisiting classics; it's part of a larger plan to bring more legacy Capcom fighting games to modern platforms with updated features.
Matsumoto emphasized Capcom's desire to create new Versus titles and re-release other legacy fighting games. While acknowledging logistical challenges and the need for collaboration with external partners, he highlighted the importance of reintroducing these classic titles to energize the community and gauge fan interest for future projects.
The future of these beloved characters, and indeed other classic Capcom fighters, rests, at least partially, on fan response to this renewed focus on the franchise's rich history.
