The gaming industry has seen a surge in remakes of classic titles, with iconic games like Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4 leading the charge. Now, another beloved game might join this prestigious list: the original Devil May Cry (DMC). Its director, Hideki Kamiya, has expressed a keen interest in crafting a remake of this seminal title.
In a recent video on his YouTube channel dated May 8, Kamiya fielded questions from fans about potential remakes and sequels. When asked specifically about a DMC remake, he enthusiastically responded, "A remake like that, well, I would like to do that."
First Released 2001
Originally launched in 2001, Devil May Cry was initially conceived as Resident Evil 4. However, significant shifts in its development led Capcom to pivot and create DMC instead. This game has since become a cornerstone in the action genre.
Reflecting on the game's origins, Kamiya revealed that the creative spark for DMC came from a personal low point. In 2000, after a painful breakup, he channeled his emotions into the game's development, using his heartache as a driving force behind its creation.
Kamiya admits he doesn't revisit his games post-release, including DMC. Yet, when he occasionally glimpses gameplay footage, he is reminded of its age and the old-school game design it embodies. If given the chance to remake DMC, Kamiya insists on building it from scratch, leveraging modern technology and contemporary game design principles.
While he isn't currently focused on the project, Kamiya remains open to the idea. He humorously urged Capcom to entrust him with the project, saying, "But if the time comes— I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do."
Beyond DMC, Kamiya also expressed interest in remaking Viewtiful Joe. With these insights, fans of Kamiya's work eagerly anticipate the possibility of these cherished games returning in a new, refreshed form.
