Development Following X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge
Edwards' Twitter revelation included the game's title card ("The Invincible Iron Man"), the Genepool Software logo, and gameplay screenshots. He followed up with original Xbox gameplay footage, showcasing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial segment. The project followed closely on the heels of the studio's release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge.
Activision's Decision to Scrap "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite enthusiastic fan response to Edwards' posts, Activision canceled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed.
While Activision never publicly explained the cancellation, Edwards offered several possible reasons based on online comments: delays in the film's release, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or perhaps another developer being chosen for the project.
The game's unique Tony Stark design, noticeably different from the MCU's Robert Downey Jr. portrayal, also sparked discussion. The design closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version of the early 2000s. Edwards stated he was unaware of the reasoning behind the artistic choices.
Edwards promised additional gameplay footage, but at the time of this writing, that footage remains unreleased.
