Mastering Hyper Light Breaker's Targeting System: Lock-On vs. Free Cam
Hyper Light Breaker's lock-on mechanic, while crucial, isn't always the best approach. This guide clarifies how to use it effectively and when to prioritize the free camera.
Targeting Enemies
To lock onto an enemy, center them in your view and press the right analog stick (R3). The game automatically selects the closest target, unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera zooms slightly. Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible on-screen and within range.
While locked on, your movement will tend to orbit the target. Fast-moving enemies can make this disorienting, potentially altering your directional inputs. To switch targets, use the right analog stick to select the nearest enemy. Press R3 again to release the lock-on and return to the free camera. The lock-on also automatically disengages if you move too far from the target.
Lock-On vs. Free Cam: When to Use Which
Lock-on excels in one-on-one encounters, particularly against bosses or strong (yellow health bar) enemies – but only after eliminating other threats. The focused camera leaves you vulnerable to attacks from unseen enemies.
For multiple enemies or weaker foes, free cam is superior. Lock-on restricts your field of vision, hindering your ability to react to surrounding enemies.
Against mini-bosses or bosses, use free cam to clear weaker enemies first. Once the coast is clear, lock onto the boss for a focused attack. For example, during Extraction, prioritize clearing regular enemies before locking onto the mini-boss.
In short, strategic use of the lock-on system significantly enhances your gameplay in Hyper Light Breaker. Understanding when to lock-on and when to rely on free cam is key to success.
