The drama surrounding HBO's House of the Dragon escalated when showrunner Ryan Condal responded to criticisms from George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind the Game of Thrones universe. In August 2024, Martin had promised to delve into "everything that's gone wrong with House of the Dragon," a promise he fulfilled by critiquing certain plot elements involving Aegon and Helaena’s children. His concerns about the show's future direction were publicly aired in a post that was later removed from his website without explanation, though not before it had reached thousands of fans and HBO.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Condal expressed his disappointment over Martin's remarks. As a long-time fan of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, Condal found the criticism particularly stinging, given his admiration for Martin as both a literary icon and a personal hero. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting Fire & Blood, the source material for House of the Dragon, into a television series, noting that the adaptation process often involves filling in gaps and making creative decisions.

Condal emphasized his efforts to involve Martin in the adaptation process, describing their collaboration as fruitful for a long time. However, he noted that as the project progressed, Martin became less willing to acknowledge the practical challenges involved. As a showrunner, Condal explained, he must balance his roles as a creative writer and a practical producer, ensuring the project moves forward for the sake of the crew, cast, and HBO. He expressed hope that he and Martin could find harmony again in the future.

Condal also highlighted the lengthy process of finalizing creative decisions, which can take months or even years, and stressed that all decisions pass through him before reaching the screen. The goal, he said, is to create a show that appeals not only to Game of Thrones readers but also to a broad television audience.

Despite some tension, HBO and Martin continue to have several projects in development, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which Martin has praised as a "faithful adaptation," and potentially another Targaryen-centered spinoff. Meanwhile, House of the Dragon has begun production on its third season, following a successful second season that received a 7/10 in our review.
