Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage
A significant server outage impacted all four North American data centers for Final Fantasy XIV on January 5th, beginning around 8:00 PM Eastern Time. While the game has faced numerous Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks throughout 2024, evidence suggests this outage stemmed from a different source: a localized power failure.
Reports from players on social media and the r/ffxiv subreddit point to a power transformer explosion in the Sacramento area, where the NA data centers are located. A loud "popping" sound, consistent with such an event, was widely reported, followed shortly by the server disruption. Service was restored approximately one hour later. Square Enix acknowledged the issue via the Lodestone and is currently investigating the cause.
The fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected lends credence to the theory of a localized power outage as the root cause, rather than a widespread cyberattack. While the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers have returned to operation, the Dynamis data center (the newest addition) remained offline at the time of this writing.
This latest incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Final Fantasy XIV's server infrastructure. Despite employing mitigation strategies against DDoS attacks, the game continues to grapple with server stability issues, adding a layer of uncertainty to the ambitious plans for 2025, including the anticipated launch of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. The long-term consequences of these recurring problems remain to be seen.
