Donkey Kong HD Credits Omit Original Developers

Nintendo's decision to exclude the original developers from Retro Studios in the credits of the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has sparked controversy. Scheduled for release on January 16, 2025, this remastered version of the 2010 Wii platformer for the Nintendo Switch has drawn attention not just for its enhanced graphics and gameplay but also for its handling of credits. The Nintendo Switch, known for its extensive library of classic titles and portability, continues to be a leading platform for retro gaming enthusiasts. Nintendo's efforts to remaster beloved games, such as Super Mario RPG and the Advance Wars series, have been well-received, revitalizing classics for both long-time fans and new players.

However, the omission of Retro Studios' staff from the full credits of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has raised eyebrows. According to reports from outlets like Nintendo Life, the credits only acknowledge the team at Forever Entertainment, responsible for porting and enhancing the game for the Switch, including content from the 3DS version. Instead of listing the original developers, the credits merely state that the game is "Based on the work of the original development staff."

Nintendo Omits Retro Studios From Donkey Kong Country Returns HD Credits

This practice aligns with Nintendo's previous approach to crediting in remastered games on the Switch. In 2023, Zoid Kirsch, a former programmer and senior gameplay engineer at Retro Studios for the Metroid Prime series, expressed disappointment over the exclusion of original team members from the credits of Metroid Prime Remastered. He highlighted that many developers felt "let down" by Nintendo's decision to omit those no longer at Retro Studios. Other developers have echoed these sentiments, criticizing the exclusion of original teams from remaster credits as "bad practice."

The issue of crediting is crucial in the gaming industry, as credits play a significant role in the career development of game developers. Recognizing the original teams in remastered titles not only honors their hard work but also sets a standard of appreciation within the industry. Furthermore, Nintendo has faced criticism for not crediting translators or imposing restrictive non-disclosure agreements that prevent them from acknowledging their work on major franchises like The Legend of Zelda. As more developers and fans voice their concerns about improper crediting practices, there is growing pressure on publishers, including Nintendo, to reconsider their approach to crediting in game releases.
