Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics

Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of turn-based combat and real-time elements. The game's creative director, Guillaume Broche, recently discussed the game's inspirations, highlighting a desire to create a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveler as stylistic influences, emphasizing a goal to deliver a visually stunning experience.

Expedition 33's combat system blends turn-based strategy with real-time reactions. Players input commands turn-by-turn, but must also react quickly to enemy attacks. This dynamic approach draws comparisons to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars. The narrative focuses on preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death through her paintings. Unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, promise a visually striking and engaging world.

While acknowledging Persona's influence on aspects like camera movement and dynamic menus, Broche emphasized the significant impact of the Final Fantasy series, particularly Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X, on the game's core design. He clarified that the game isn't a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal experiences and tastes shaped by these classic titles. The team aims for a unique art style and gameplay experience, distinct from its inspirations.

Exploration in the open world offers complete player control over characters, allowing for on-the-fly party switching and the use of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. The developers express a desire for players to experiment with character builds and combinations, encouraging creative and unconventional gameplay. Their ultimate goal is to create a game that resonates with players as deeply as classic titles have impacted their own lives.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
