Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting!
Larian Studios' highly anticipated Patch 7 for Baldur's Gate 3 has unleashed a tidal wave of community-created mods. The response has been phenomenal.
Over a Million Mods Installed in Under 24 Hours
Larian CEO Swen Vincke proudly announced on X (formerly Twitter) that over one million mods were installed within the first day of Patch 7's release on September 5th. This was further confirmed and expanded upon by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported the install count exceeding three million and still climbing! "Modding is pretty big," Vincke stated.
Patch 7: More Than Just Mods
Patch 7 isn't solely about mods; it also introduced significant gameplay enhancements. These include new evil endings, improved split-screen functionality, and the much-requested integrated Mod Manager. This in-game tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management.
The official modding tools, available separately on Steam, empower modders to craft custom narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. The toolkit supports custom script loading and basic debugging, with direct mod publishing capabilities.
Unlocking the Full Potential: Community-Made Toolkit
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus). This expanded toolkit reportedly includes a full level editor and reactivates features previously restricted in Larian's official editor. While Larian initially limited access to its development tools, focusing on game development rather than tool creation, the community has taken the initiative to broaden the possibilities.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding support for both PC and consoles, though Vincke acknowledges the complexity of this undertaking. The PC version will lead the way, with console support following after thorough testing and submission processes.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 boasts numerous improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With further updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
