Author : Matthew Nov 01,2025

Ubisoft celebrates another player milestone for Assassin's Creed Shadows while keeping sales figures confidential.

Through social media, Ubisoft announced Shadows has reached 2 million players since its March 20 launch, doubling its day-one count of 1 million. This achievement surpasses previous franchise launches Origins and Odyssey. "Thank you for joining our feudal Japan adventure!" the company stated.

While impressive, it's important to note Ubisoft hasn't disclosed sales numbers. However, Shadows has become Steam's top-selling title following Ubisoft's return to the platform after years of Epic Games Store exclusivity.

Currently tracking 58,894 concurrent Steam players, Shadows ranks among Valve's top 30 titles. Player counts are projected to climb throughout launch weekend.

For context, Origins peaked at 41,551 Steam players seven years ago, while Odyssey reached 62,069. Shadows appears poised to surpass these records.

BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched October 31, 2024 with an 89,418 player Steam peak.

Shadows' complete player count will significantly exceed Steam figures, incorporating PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms - though Sony and Microsoft don't publish player statistics.

Considerable pressure rests on Shadows' performance following multiple delays and 2023's disappointing Star Wars Outlaws sales. Ubisoft's recent troubles include high-profile failures, staff reductions, studio shutdowns, and canceled projects, culminating in reported discussions between the Guillemot family and Tencent regarding potential investment deals.

The game has weathered several controversies, particularly in Japan. Recent updates reportedly addressed concerns from Japanese politicians regarding sacred site depictions.

This week saw Japanese House of Councillors member Hiroyuki Kada formally raise Shadows-related concerns during a government session, prompting a response from Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
