Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and the industry's struggle with generative AI.
While ZZZ, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (pre-dating its July 25, 2024 commencement), the actors' decisions reflect solidarity with striking union members and a desire for AI protection. Chase, a SAG-AFTRA member, refused work not covered by a SAG Interim Agreement, stating that the strike's outcome will shape the industry's future. Thurkettle, a non-union member, also chose not to participate, citing the existential threat posed by AI’s potential impact on voice actors. Both actors expressed surprise at their replacement, noting a lack of communication from HoYoverse and Sound Cadence.
Chase hoped HoYoVerse would wait for her return, acknowledging the possibility of replacement. Thurkettle, despite not being a union member, stood by his decision, viewing it as a personal stand for actor protection, even at the cost of his role. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.
This isn't an isolated incident. Activision similarly recast characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, replacing Zeke Alton (William Peck) and Julie Nathanson (Samantha Maxis) in the Zombies mode. While Alton didn't object to the replacement itself, he expressed concern about the lack of credit for the new voice actor, which could mislead fans and unfairly represent his abilities.
