For PC players eager to dive into The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, you've likely discovered the game is plagued by a host of technical problems.
As reported by the technical specialists at Digital Foundry, the PC version of Oblivion Remastered suffers from severe performance issues. Video producer Alex Battaglia described it as "potentially one of the most poorly optimized titles I have evaluated for Digital Foundry."
Battaglia noted, "Even on top-tier hardware, the stuttering is so severe it significantly mars the gameplay. It's difficult to comprehend how this performance level was deemed acceptable for launch."
"Beyond the persistent hitching, this is one of the most unusually demanding games I've tested. Even if you can tolerate the inconsistent frame pacing, you'll likely need to lower graphical settings just to maintain a passable average frame rate," he added.
Consequently, it's no shock that the most popular Oblivion Remastered mod on Nexus Mods is P40L0's 'Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless)', amassing an incredible 386,604 downloads in under a week.
The mod's description states:
"These are definitive 'Engine.ini' modifications designed to eliminate most stuttering, boost performance and stability, minimize input latency, and enhance image clarity—all without sacrificing visual quality."
"After extensive UE5 testing, I'm sharing my ultimate custom 'Engine.ini' adjustments for the game," P40L0 explained.
"My objective was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible—targeting CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD—to eradicate stutters, improve performance, decrease input lag, and sharpen image quality. This includes removing Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more, all without introducing graphical errors or crashes."

Feedback on the mod has been overwhelmingly positive. "The stuttering is gone! Absolutely incredible, thank you!" exclaimed chubbyd07. "This .ini file works wonders. My frame rate jumped from 15-20 fps outside the prison to a stable 65-70. I'm running a 3600XT and a 2060 with 20GB of RAM," shared yeeto51. "Wait, what?! I went from 60fps on High settings near Waynon Priory to 90-110fps in the same spot. Pure magic!" said BabaSmith.
Despite its technical shortcomings on PC, Oblivion Remastered continues to attract a massive player base, boasting a notable concurrent player peak on Steam and over four million players across all platforms. On Steam, the game holds a 'Very Positive' user review rating.
However, a recent hotfix deployed on April 25 introduced a problem for Microsoft Store players, affecting the UI settings for graphics—specifically options for upscaling and anti-aliasing. As of this writing, players using the Microsoft Store (such as those on PC Game Pass) cannot adjust these settings due to a UI bug. Bethesda has acknowledged the issue and is investigating a solution.
