During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was confirmed that the GameCube version of Wind Waker would be available on the new console. This sparked curiosity among fans about the fate of Wind Waker HD, which was initially released for the Wii U. Clarification came from Nate Bihldorff, Senior Vice President of Product Development at Nintendo of America, in a conversation with Kinda Funny Games Daily's Tim Gettys during a Switch 2 press event in New York on April 9. When asked if the inclusion of Wind Waker on the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) service would prevent the HD version from being ported to the Switch 2, Bihldorff firmly stated, "no, all options are on the table." This leaves the door wide open for a potential Wind Waker HD port, although no definitive plans have been announced yet.

Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker captivated gamers with its unique cel-shaded art style and engaging gameplay. A decade later, in 2013, Wind Waker HD was released for the Wii U, boasting significant enhancements such as upgraded visuals from 480p to HD, improved lighting, gyro controls for weapons, faster sailing, and various other gameplay adjustments. With the GameCube library being exclusive to the Switch 2, porting Wind Waker HD could provide original Switch owners the chance to experience this enhanced version.

In addition to these developments, Nintendo is rebranding its Switch Online classics game libraries to "Nintendo Classics." Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will soon enjoy playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on the Switch 2, with more titles promised in the future. These games will also feature in-game options like retro screen filters and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
