Transformers: Reactivate Canceled by Splash Damage

Splash Damage officially cancels the long-awaited Transformers: Reactivate. The 1-4 player online game, initially teased at The Game Awards 2022, was to feature a collaborative Autobot and Decepticon effort against a new alien threat. While leaks suggested a Generation 1 roster including Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, and Soundwave (with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee also rumored), and even hinted at Beast Wars characters, the project has been terminated.

The studio's announcement cites a challenging development process as the reason for cancellation. This decision unfortunately may result in staff layoffs as Splash Damage refocuses its efforts. The developer expressed gratitude to the Reactivate team and Hasbro for their support. Fan reactions are mixed, with some expressing disappointment, while others anticipated the cancellation given the prolonged silence since the initial trailer.

Splash Damage is now concentrating on "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built using Unreal Engine 5, in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. This shift in focus, however, will not be without cost, as job losses are expected due to Transformers: Reactivate's cancellation. The absence of a new AAA Transformers game leaves fans wanting.

Summary

  • Transformers: Reactivate cancelled after a difficult development.
  • Potential layoffs at Splash Damage.
  • Studio now focused on the Unreal Engine 5 open-world survival game, "Project Astrid."
