Exploring Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA and DS Gems
This article takes a slightly different approach to showcasing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike some other platforms, the Switch doesn't boast a massive library of dedicated Game Boy Advance (GBA) and Nintendo DS ports. Therefore, we're combining both systems in a single list, highlighting titles available on the Switch eShop, excluding those found in the Nintendo Switch Online app. Here are ten of our favorites – four GBA and six DS titles – presented without any specific ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Let's kick things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version is generally considered superior, this GBA iteration offers a solid alternative. It's a worthwhile experience, particularly for comparing versions, and provides a more streamlined playthrough for some. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of your preferred platform, often appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
The Mega Man X series encountered some difficulties on home consoles, but its true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent series of side-scrolling action games, although its initial entry might feel slightly rough around the edges. Subsequent games refine the formula, but this first installment is the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
We're featuring another Mega Man title, but it's justified given the stark contrast between Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries in this series saw diminishing returns, the original game offers ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection contains several worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's a preferred choice over even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes the grinding enjoyable. The unique setting and hidden secrets contribute to its appeal, solidifying its position as a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. The DSiWare release of Shantae: Risky’s Revenge broadened its audience significantly. This title launched Shantae's continued success across various consoles. Interestingly, it's rooted in an unreleased GBA game, which itself is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
One could argue this belongs in the GBA section, as it originated on that platform, though its initial release wasn't localized. Ace Attorney is known for its engaging blend of investigation and courtroom drama, punctuated by humorous elements and compelling narratives. The first game is particularly strong, even if later entries hold personal preference for some.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick maintains the high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you utilize your abilities to save individuals while uncovering the mystery surrounding your own death. This title is a captivating experience, deserving of wider recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
The World Ends With You is considered a top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a Nintendo DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all the Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worthwhile, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the replacement of touch controls with standard button controls. However, all three DS titles within the collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but this adaptation to the Switch is a successful attempt. Each game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a challenging but rewarding adventure.
