In a recent interview with Wccftech, Eclipse Glow Games, the developers behind Tides of Annihilation, revealed the intriguing reasoning behind their choice of Arthurian myths and a London setting. Let's delve into the game's concept and future plans.
Tides of Annihilation: A Western-Focused Adventure
Arthurian Myths and Knights: The Core Concept
At Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games spoke with Wccftech, discussing Tides of Annihilation's concept, mechanics, and potential for an anthology. The decision to set the game in a Western context, despite the developers' Chinese origins, stemmed from Tencent's strategic vision. Tencent, the game's financial backer, had differing expectations for this project and Black Myth: Wukong. While Wukong targeted the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation was specifically aimed at a Western audience, leading to the selection of Arthurian legends as the central theme. The producer's initial concept of knights evolved into the iconic King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
The game unfolds in a post-apocalyptic, modern-day London, devastated by an invasion from the Outworld, leaving Gwendolyn as seemingly the sole human survivor. While grounded in an alternate modern setting, the game incorporates fantasy elements directly inspired by Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-Inspired Combat and a Roster of Bosses
The gameplay reveal immediately highlights Tides of Annihilation's combat system, drawing clear comparisons to the Devil May Cry series. The developers confirmed the resemblance, stating it's "definitely more like Devil May Cry," but with adjustable difficulty settings. This accessibility feature broadens the game's appeal to a wider range of players.
Combat customization is a key element, with four distinct weapons and over ten Knights of the Round Table to command as allies. Gwendolyn's ability to summon these legendary knights adds a strategic layer to the gameplay. Players will face over 30 unique bosses, promising challenging and rewarding encounters. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers emphasized.
An Anthology in the Making?
Eclipse Glow Games expressed interest in expanding the franchise into an anthology, featuring different settings, mythologies, and protagonists. The core concept of the Outworld invasion would remain a constant throughout the series. The success of Tides of Annihilation will be crucial in determining the future of this potential anthology.
Currently in beta, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will follow Gwendolyn's journey as she confronts destiny and strives to save not only London, but also the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
