SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales

Author : Bella Jan 24,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but let's not forget the good times. This week? A plethora of reviews, some fresh releases, and a few enticing sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now it’s the turn of the Ace Attorney Investigations collection. This compilation features Miles Edgeworth's two adventures following Trials & Tribulations. The sequel cleverly builds upon the first game's narrative, enhancing the overall experience. Finally having the second game officially localized in English is a major win.

The shift to Edgeworth's perspective offers a unique look at the prosecution's side. While the core gameplay remains familiar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses – the presentation is refreshed and engaging. The pacing differs from the main series, sometimes leading to lengthy cases, but fans of the Ace Attorney franchise will find much to enjoy. If the first game feels slow, persevere; the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialogue history also makes a welcome addition.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between the two games, forming a rewarding experience. The localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extra features make this a must-have for any Ace Attorney enthusiast. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick!? It's surprising, but welcome! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel to the obscure NES classic delivers six lengthy and challenging physics-based platforming levels. A new easier mode caters to those seeking a less punishing experience.

The core gameplay remains true to the original, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool. Collectibles add extra depth, unlocking customization options. The game's difficulty is substantial, leading to frequent deaths, but generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration. The charming visuals and lively music add to the experience.

While not overly long, Gimmick! 2 maintains the challenging spirit of its predecessor. Mastering platforming skills and utilizing Yumetaro's star effectively are crucial for progress. This sequel successfully builds upon the original without losing its identity. Fans of the first game and challenging platformers will appreciate this title. However, casual players should be aware of the significant difficulty.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. While the Switch's hardware may struggle at times, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and eerie visuals still deliver a compelling experience.

The weapon system is a highlight, requiring players to manage energy levels and utilize melee attacks to recharge their primary weapon. A rotating third weapon adds strategic depth. Mastering the rhythm of weapon management and defensive maneuvers is key to survival.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinctive atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still enjoyable.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in fan service, with strong writing and systems that reward dedicated players. However, the limited selection of mini-games and lack of depth may leave non-fans wanting more.

The game's presentation is solid, but the repetitive gameplay and story focused on the Umamusume universe may not appeal to those unfamiliar with the franchise. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service may overshadow the overall gameplay experience.

While visually appealing and packed with unlockables, Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash lacks longevity. Fans might find enough to keep them entertained, but others will likely find it underwhelming.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized, a significant achievement. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is challenging but charming, Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's Japanese catalog.

Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these previously unlocalized titles is commendable, and hopefully, this is the first of many such releases.
