Switch Launch Games: Anticipation at Bay

Author : Leo Feb 11,2025

With the Nintendo Switch 2's imminent arrival, speculation about its launch titles is rampant. While an official lineup remains elusive, let's explore some likely and hopeful contenders. Nintendo boasts a strong portfolio, making some predictions—like a new Mario title—highly probable. However, we also anticipate exciting new projects from acclaimed indie developers.

While expecting all these games on day one is optimistic, even half would constitute a fantastic launch. Here are our predictions (and hopes) for the Switch 2's debut:

Mario Kart 9

Over a decade since Mario Kart 8's Wii U release, its Switch iteration, bolstered by DLC, boasts 96 tracks and remains a best-seller. A sequel is highly anticipated, promising fresh innovations while retaining the series' winning formula. A Switch 2 launch alongside this title would be a powerful statement.

New 3D Super Mario

The Switch surprisingly lacked multiple 3D Mario titles. Super Mario Odyssey (2017) remains the sole new 3D entry. A new installment, brimming with inventive gameplay and collectibles, is long overdue. A simultaneous release with Mario Kart 9 would be a dream scenario, showcasing Nintendo's commitment to its flagship franchise.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Metroid Prime 4, initially announced in 2017, experienced a lengthy development cycle, shifting from Bandai Namco to Retro Studios. Now titled Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, its gameplay reveal hints at a visually stunning experience. A Switch 2 launch would be a fitting culmination of its protracted development.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Enhanced

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are Switch behemoths. Backward compatibility is expected, but enhanced versions leveraging the Switch 2's rumored power (e.g., 4K resolution, improved frame rates) would be a welcome addition.

Ring Fit Adventure 2

Nintendo often includes unique titles at console launches. Ring Fit Adventure, a fitness-focused RPG, defied expectations, selling over 15 million copies. A sequel, showcasing the Switch 2's capabilities, could be a surprise hit.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

The original Switch lacked the power for Capcom's Resident Evil 4 Remake. The Switch 2, however, could offer a compelling portable experience for this critically acclaimed title. Its inclusion would demonstrate the console's graphical prowess.

Doom: The Dark Ages

While ambitious, Doom: The Dark Ages on Switch 2 is plausible, given the success of previous Doom ports and Microsoft's cross-platform strategy. A Switch 2 release alongside its official reveal would be a significant coup.

The Haunted Chocolatier

Following the success of Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe's The Haunted Chocolatier is highly anticipated. A Switch 2 launch would be a perfect fit, offering hours of engaging gameplay. While a day-one release may be optimistic, a launch-year window is entirely possible.

Earthblade

Earthblade, the sequel to the acclaimed Celeste, is another strong indie contender. While updates have been infrequent, a 2025 release, potentially aligning with the Switch 2 launch, remains a possibility.

These titles represent a mix of highly probable AAA releases and exciting indie prospects. The Switch 2's launch lineup will undoubtedly shape its early success, and these games are strong contenders for inclusion.
