Star Wars Hunters Publisher Announces Unexpected Shutdown Just Nine Months After Launch

Zynga, publisher of Star Wars Hunters, has revealed plans to sunset the game completely mere months after its debut - along with canceling its planned PC release on Steam.

The free-to-play team battle arena game developed by NaturalMotion launched across Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms in June 2024. In our Star Wars: Hunters review, IGN awarded it a 7/10, noting: "While Star Wars: Hunters delivers entertaining PvP action, its appeal proves somewhat fleeting - like a brief but enjoyable trip to Mos Eisley Cantoon."

This assessment appears particularly accurate now, as Zynga confirmed that "after thorough evaluation" the final content update would arrive April 15, with servers remaining operational through October 1, 2025.

"We recognize this decision may disappoint our passionate community," Zynga stated. "Please know this conclusion wasn't reached lightly. We'll provide transparent updates throughout the transition period."

The shutdown timeline includes:

  • March 25: Season 5 extended three weeks with returning events and store bundles
  • April 15: Final update introduces free Support Hunter Tuya and disables purchases
  • October 1: Complete server shutdown

Notably absent from the announcement was any mention of the planned Steam release, with the store page now marked "no longer available."

The Take-Two subsidiary, primarily known for mobile hits like FarmVille and Words With Friends, had positioned Hunters as its debut console title while planning its first-ever PC launch.

"The overwhelming response to Hunters on existing platforms motivated our PC expansion," Zynga's EVP Yaron Leyvan had stated last November regarding the now-canceled Steam version.

Star Wars fans can still anticipate several upcoming titles including Respawn's next Jedi installment and Bit Reactor's tactical game reveal slated for Star Wars Celebration 2025.
