The developers at 1047 Games are back with an exciting sequel to their 2019 multiplayer FPS, Splitgate. Dive into the details of what you can expect from the upcoming Sol Splitgate League.

Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025

Familiar yet Fresh

On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to the free-to-play shooter that captivated players worldwide since its 2019 launch.

CEO Ian Proulx shared their vision, stating, "Our goal is to create a game that can thrive for a decade or more." While the original game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, the team recognized that "to craft a lasting modern game, we needed to develop a robust and engaging gameplay loop."

Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, emphasized their focus on enhancing the portal mechanics, noting, "We aimed to refine our portal system so that both Portal Gods and casual players can enjoy the game without feeling overwhelmed."

Though details about Splitgate 2’s gameplay are still under wraps, it's confirmed that the game will be built using Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." While retaining some familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 is designed to feel entirely new and fresh compared to its predecessor."

Splitgate 2 is slated for release in 2025 across PC, PS5|PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One platforms.

Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players use wormholes to navigate maps strategically. The original game gained massive traction after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo that attracted about 600,000 downloads in just one month. The surge in popularity forced the servers offline temporarily to increase their capacity.

After years in early access, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio then announced a halt on updates to focus on "building the game fans truly deserve," hinting at "revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes" for the new title in the Splitgate universe.

New Characters, Maps, Factions

The trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and three unique factions designed to "enhance the gameplay experience significantly."

According to the game's Steam page, each faction offers distinct playstyles. Joining Aeros lets you "swiftly dash across the battlefield." Alternatively, you can "control the chaos with Meridian’s tactical and time-manipulating abilities," or simply "charge in with Sabrask’s brute force."

While specifics on how these factions will impact gameplay remain undisclosed, it's clear that "Splitgate 2 is not aiming to be a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.

For a closer look at gameplay, fans will need to wait until Gamescom 2024, held from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer promises "an authentic glimpse into what awaits in Splitgate 2." The developers confirmed that "the maps, weapons, and even the portal trail effects seen in the trailer are genuine features of the game." They also teased, "In homage to Halo, we've reintroduced dual wielding, a fan-favorite mechanic."
