Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation
A recently surfaced job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment has established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is reportedly developing a high-profile, original IP for the PS5.
The news has generated considerable excitement among PlayStation fans, who eagerly anticipate updates from established studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Sony's strategic acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have further fueled this anticipation.
The identity of this secretive new studio remains undisclosed, but speculation is rife. One theory suggests it houses a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This could be related to Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.
Another strong contender is a team led by industry veteran Jason Blundell, formerly a co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many of its former employees, under Blundell's leadership, subsequently joined PlayStation in May 2024, leading to speculation that this new studio is their current home. Given the longer timeframe of Blundell's team's formation, this seems a more likely scenario. The project they are developing remains unknown, but it's possible it's a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' abandoned project.
While a formal announcement from Sony may be some time away, the existence of this new studio assures fans that another highly anticipated PlayStation first-party title is in development.
