Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

Author : Amelia Mar 18,2025

Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These popular themes, which added nostalgic imagery and sounds from previous PlayStation generations, are leaving the PS5 store tomorrow, January 31st, 2025.

However, Sony assures fans that this isn't goodbye. The positive response to the themes has prompted them to work on bringing these designs back in the coming months. They stated: “Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow…Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

Unfortunately, there's a downside. Sony has confirmed that they currently have no plans to release additional themes beyond these four classic console designs. They stated: “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.” This news has been met with some disappointment from fans who hoped for a wider selection of customizable themes on the PS5.

The temporary themes offered a fun way to celebrate PlayStation's 30th anniversary (December 3, 2024). Each theme faithfully recreated the look and feel of its respective console generation, from the PSOne's console image to the PS2's menu shapes, PS3's wave background, and the PS4's similar wave patterns. All themes also incorporated the iconic boot-up sounds of each console.
