Earlier this month, Sega confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds would feature guest characters like Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza, Joker from Persona 5, and even Steve, Alex, and the Creeper from Minecraft. But the guest lineup doesn’t end there. Sega has now unveiled a collaboration with Nickelodeon, bringing SpongeBob SquarePants to the racetrack—and hinting at future additions from Avatar and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a kart racer built around Sega’s iconic characters, celebrating the company’s rich legacy. To expand the roster, high-profile guest characters are being added. Those who purchase the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Digital Deluxe Edition receive the Season Pass, which includes the Nickelodeon content, the recently announced Minecraft characters, vehicles, and tracks, racers from the Netflix series Sonic Prime, and two more undisclosed collaborations.
The trailer below showcases SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star racing in the Patty Wagon—a vehicle designed like a Krabby Patty from the SpongeBob SquarePants series—along the Bikini Bottom track, the iconic setting of the show.
Sega has stated that CrossWorlds will offer a massive roster of playable characters when including DLC. Expected favorites like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Shadow, and Tails are all present, and now you can also race as SpongeBob SquarePants.CrossWorlds is set to compete with the Switch 2 exclusive kart game Mario Kart World, which has so far kept its roster strictly within Nintendo’s own universe. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch on both Switch and Switch 2, positioning it for a classic Mario vs. Sonic kart racing showdown when it arrives in September.
IGN recently got hands-on with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and was impressed. “It’s a vibe,” they said, “and one that I’ve enjoyed and will look forward to drifting through.”
