Paramount Pictures has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will zoom onto the big screen on March 19, 2027. Variety reports the release date, giving fans a two-year wait until the blue blur returns to theaters. Currently, no further plot details or casting information has been revealed beyond this date.
This sequel comes as no surprise, following the phenomenal success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film raked in $218 million domestically and over $420 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise, surpassing the impressive $148 million earned by the first installment. This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the initial controversy surrounding the original Sonic design, which underwent significant alterations during post-production.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 also holds the title of the second highest-grossing video game movie in North America, trailing only the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, continuing the cinematic rivalry between Nintendo and Sega.
The live-action Sonic franchise continues to expand, now encompassing three feature films and a Knuckles-centric streaming TV series spin-off. Based on the beloved Sega video game series, the films follow Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he battles his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Each film introduces more iconic characters, including Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba), with *Sonic 3* finally bringing Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) into the live-action world. While Sonic 3 hinted at the next character joining the franchise, we'll keep that a secret for now.
