Smash Bros. Dating App Receives Cease-and-Desist Order

Author : Skylar May 21,2025

Smash Together, an unofficial dating app designed for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts to connect and find romantic partners, announced that it has been hit with a cease-and-desist letter just before its scheduled open beta launch. The app, which was set to go live on May 15 following months of development, faced a setback when its official Twitter account posted a disheartening Yoshi meme on May 13, stating, "We got cease and desisted." This unexpected news was first spotted by Automaton.

Although the developers have not explicitly named the sender of the cease-and-desist letter, the consensus among the community is that it likely originated from Nintendo, given the app's focus on Super Smash Bros. fans.

SmashTogether marketed itself as the "premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds," promising users the chance to find their "dream Doubles partner (in and out of Smash)" through a specialized matchmaking algorithm designed to pair players with their perfect "Smash Partner."

Screenshots shared by the app showcased features tailored to the gaming community, including sections where users could list their favorite character or "main," as well as highlight their notable tournament wins. The app also included unique prompts like, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major," adding a fun twist to traditional dating app interactions.

Beyond potential issues related to intellectual property and copyright infringement, the concept of a dating app centered around a competitive game like Super Smash Bros. may have been enough to prompt the issuance of the cease-and-desist letter.

As of now, there has been no further communication from the SmashTogether team regarding any plans to pivot the app's concept away from Super Smash Bros. Fans and followers will need to stay tuned for any updates on the app's future.
