Simu Liu, star of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is spearheading the adaptation of the popular video game Sleeping Dogs into a feature film. Contrary to earlier reports, this isn't just a nascent project; a source close to the production confirms it's actively in development. Liu is not only slated to play the lead role of Wei Shen but is also serving as a producer.
This development follows a previous, now-abandoned attempt at a Sleeping Dogs film adaptation announced in 2017, starring Donnie Yen. Yen himself recently confirmed the project's cancellation. Liu's involvement, however, signifies a fresh start for the much-loved franchise. His enthusiasm, fueled by fan support, extends beyond the film; he's also expressed his desire to help develop a Sleeping Dogs sequel game.
The original Sleeping Dogs game, released in 2012, captivated players with its gripping narrative of undercover detective Wei Shen infiltrating Hong Kong's Triad gangs. Despite not meeting initial sales expectations, its enduring popularity has kept hopes for a sequel alive.
The current film adaptation is being spearheaded by Story Kitchen, a production company with a strong track record in video game adaptations, including the Sonic the Hedgehog films and Netflix's Tomb Raider series. They're also working on adaptations of Streets of Rage and It Takes Two. Square Enix, the rights holder, remains involved. While a writer and director are attached, a release date and production start date remain undisclosed.
This project marks a significant resurgence for Sleeping Dogs, which saw its sequel canceled in 2013 and its original developer, United Front Games, close three years later. Over a decade after the game's release, Sleeping Dogs is poised for a cinematic comeback.
