Shawn Levy, renowned for directing Deadpool & Wolverine, is still on track to helm an upcoming Star Wars movie, and we have an encouraging update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. In a recent conversation with Screen Rant, Tropper expressed his excitement and hinted that the film might be released sooner than fans anticipate.
Details about the project remain largely under wraps, but we know it will be set after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified that the film takes place in the future, specifically "post-nine, maybe five or six years out," making it the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is slated for 2026. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this new Star Wars venture.
While fans eagerly await more news, Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that progress is being made. However, given the timeline, the film won't hit theaters until at least late 2026, or possibly 2027.
Disney's last Star Wars film was the controversial Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. A Star Wars movie originally slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several script changes, with Steven Knight recently stepping down after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming films.
Disney's Star Wars plans extend beyond these films. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace screens will be Season 2 of Andor, set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
