Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the eagerly anticipated sequel to their 2022 roguelite shooter, Returnal. Set to launch in 2026 exclusively on PlayStation 5, with enhanced features for the PS5 Pro, Saros promises to be a thrilling addition to the gaming landscape. The announcement came during the latest PlayStation State of Play event, showcasing Rahul Kohli in the starring role.
In Saros, players will take on the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a mission to uncover truths on a perilous, ever-changing planet shadowed by an eclipse and inhabited by formidable entities. The game's atmosphere and the tagline "come back stronger" resonate strongly with the roguelike genre, while the visuals of spreading fireballs hint at Housemarque's signature bullet-hell style.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's gameplay-centric approach. Although it's a new single-player IP, it builds upon the third-person action established in Returnal. However, Saros introduces a significant gameplay difference: while the world transforms with each player death, there's now an opportunity for permanent upgrades to weapons and suits, adding a new layer of progression.
More details are slated to be revealed later this year, with Housemarque planning to showcase an extended gameplay demonstration. For a comprehensive overview of all the announcements from the PlayStation State of Play, make sure to visit our recap.
