Eggers, Dafoe Team for Scrooge Remake

Author : Matthew Apr 05,2026

Here's a fascinating twist in filmmaker-studio dynamics: Robert Eggers, the visionary behind The Witch and Nosferatu, is reportedly in talks to direct a Warner Bros. remake of A Christmas Carol—with Willem Dafoe eyed to portray Ebenezer Scrooge.

As reported by Variety, neither Eggers nor Dafoe are officially attached yet, but the studio is actively considering the director, who has expressed strong interest in casting his frequent collaborator. With the project still in early development, audiences shouldn’t expect a release anytime soon.

Eggers’ immediate priority is Werwulf, a period horror film he’s writing and directing for Focus Features. This suggests A Christmas Carol would follow afterward, potentially entering production as he wraps his 13th-century nightmare. Of course, Hollywood timelines remain unpredictable.

The director recently described Werwulf as "the darkest thing" he’s ever written, raising intriguing questions about his approach to Dickens’ classic. Will he maintain his signature gothic intensity or soften his style? Given Eggers’ track record, a hauntingly visceral interpretation seems likely—and utterly compelling.

Co-written with Sjón (their third collaboration after The Northman and the upcoming Labyrinth sequel), Werwulf is slated for Christmas 2026. If A Christmas Carol targets 2027, official news may arrive sooner than anticipated.
