Summary

  • Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to achieve remarkable sales years after their initial releases.
  • In December 2024, Grand Theft Auto V secured the third spot as the best-selling PS5 title in both the US/Canada and Europe.

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 defy expectations, maintaining exceptionally strong sales years after their launches. These titles represent the pinnacle of Rockstar's acclaimed open-world game design, solidifying the studio's reputation for quality and enduring appeal.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V thrust players into the roles of three aspiring criminals navigating the sprawling, chaotic city of Los Santos. Its initial success was amplified by subsequent releases across multiple platforms and the incredibly popular online multiplayer component, GTA Online. This has cemented GTA V’s place as one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time. Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, transported players to the untamed American West, allowing them to experience the outlaw life through the eyes of Arthur Morgan. This title also achieved widespread critical acclaim and significant commercial success.

Despite Grand Theft Auto V's near 12-year lifespan and Red Dead Redemption 2's almost seven years on the market, both games continue to dominate sales charts. PlayStation's December 2024 download charts reveal Grand Theft Auto V as the third best-selling PS5 title in the US/Canada and Europe, and fifth on the PS4 charts in both regions. Red Dead Redemption 2 performed even better, achieving the highest PS4 sales in the US and second place in Europe, surpassed only by EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Remain PlayStation Sales Chart Toppers

Data from the European 2024 GSD figures (as reported by VGC) shows Grand Theft Auto V as the fourth best-selling game of the year, climbing from fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw an increase, rising to seventh place from eighth in 2023. Parent company Take-Two Interactive recently announced that Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed 205 million units sold, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has exceeded 67 million.

The enduring popularity of these older titles underscores Rockstar's exceptional game design and longevity. Fans eagerly anticipate the future of both franchises: the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, rumored for release later this year, and potential ports of Red Dead Redemption 2, including speculation of a release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
