Sony Announces Optional PSN Accounts for Select PC Game Ports

PSN Accounts for Playstation's PC Ports No Longer Required (For Some Games)

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy, making PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts optional for several PlayStation 5 titles released on PC. This shift, effective after the January 30, 2025 launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, addresses previous player concerns regarding mandatory PSN account linking.

Games Affected:

The change impacts several key titles, including:

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • God of War Ragnarök
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025 release)

Importantly, this does not apply to all PC ports. Games like Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and Until Dawn will continue to require PSN accounts.

Incentives for PSN Account Holders:

While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players who choose to log in with their PSN accounts. Benefits include:

  • Trophies: Earn and track trophies.
  • Friend Management: Connect and interact with friends.
  • In-Game Bonuses: Exclusive content for specific games:
    • Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit early unlocks.
    • God of War Ragnarök: Armor of the Black Bear set and resource bundle.
    • The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points and Ellie skin (Jordan's Jacket).
    • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Nora Valiant outfit.

Sony suggests further incentives are planned.

Addressing Past Backlash:

This policy change follows significant player backlash in 2024. The mandatory PSN linking for Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök on PC drew criticism, particularly due to PSN's limited geographical availability (approximately 70 countries). The resulting negative reviews and logistical hurdles for players in unsupported regions prompted Sony to reconsider its approach.

This move signifies a potential shift in Sony's strategy regarding PC gaming, aiming for greater accessibility and a more positive player experience. The long-term implications of this change remain to be seen.
