Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Blown Away After Discovering Some Cards Reference Iconic Game Boy Locations

Author : Claire Feb 19,2025

Pokémon TCG Pocket's captivating card art has captivated players for months, but recently, hidden details connecting the artwork to the original Game Boy games have surfaced.

The discovery started over the weekend when a Reddit user, asch_win, highlighted subtle landmarks in the Spearow card. The Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted in a scene featuring grass, a fence, trees, and notably, two buildings. One building, rendered in purple and yellow, strongly resembles the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Furthermore, the surrounding area mirrors Route 16, a known Spearow habitat in Kanto.

This intentional referencing of classic Pokémon games by developers Creatures Inc. and DeNA isn't isolated to Spearow. Another Reddit user, jteede, uncovered further connections, including a Diglett card situated near Vermillion City and a Haunter card positioned beside Lavender Town's iconic tower. asch_win also identified location references within several Supporter cards.

Many card illustrations feature Pokémon in fantastical settings unrelated to established Pokémon lore. Some, like a Pikachu variant, mirror real-world collectible cards. However, others are unique to Pokémon TCG Pocket, making these Easter eggs all the more intriguing.

The Pokémon TCG Pocket community enthusiastically joined the search, uncovering additional references. A Gyarados full-art card seems to include the S.S. Anne, while Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards appear to depict a scene from the seaside Snorlax encounter in FireRed and LeafGreen.

Since its October mobile release, Pokémon TCG Pocket has received one additional booster expansion, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four. Further expansions are anticipated, with occasional new cards added through Wonder Pick Events and updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue releasing cards spanning various Pokémon generations, players eagerly await the discovery of more hidden references.

Meanwhile, players can participate in the current Wonder Pick event featuring Charmander and Squirtle, and explore the ongoing debate surrounding the impact of pack selection.
