This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to a dwindling supply of retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural foray into the console market exceeded all expectations, resulting in a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles may have challenged Nintendo's dominance years ago, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites, presented without ranking.
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving but often overlooked gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a perilous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging boss battles, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't quite as strong, the collection is a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's crowning achievement and a key driver of PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Metal Gear Solid catapulted a dormant franchise into the mainstream. While later entries delved into increasingly eccentric territory, the original remains a standout, feeling less philosophical and more akin to a thrilling GI Joe episode. Its engaging gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. Although the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains. The vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs make for a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could fill this list with Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII to showcase other games. Chrono Cross, though failing to fully replicate the success of Chrono Trigger, stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, my perspective is colored by nostalgia. Objectively, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 are standout entries. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors, offering a brief period of balance before the series veered off course. The Legacy Collections allow for personal judgment.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many games it didn't own. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with refined action. Its creator is also behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, hinting at a deceptively challenging experience beneath its approachable exterior.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system builds upon Game Arts' previous work.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. Personally, I prefer the original, focusing on tomb raiding over action. This collection lets players decide for themselves.
moon ($18.99)

A deeper cut, moon (originally Japan-only) deconstructs the standard RPG formula. It's more of an adventure game, possessing a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and underlying message make it a worthwhile experience.
