PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, Not a Home Run
If 2K were to poll gamers on which pro sports franchises they'd most like to see revived, NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead delivering its third PGA Tour 2K title, and after a few hours of gameplay, it shows considerable promise.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in PGA Tour 2K25. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, such as occasional frame rate hiccups on PC, were easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) proved intuitive. Difficulty levels adjust the swing's sensitivity, allowing for casual or highly precise play. A "Perfect Swing" mode offers a more forgiving experience. The addition of lateral movement on the tee box for shot adjustments is a welcome touch. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods further enhanced the experience.
MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, including a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that also affects stats. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, allows for reasonable character customization, now enhanced with skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent competence across various aspects. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
